General Summary

The Bar-Back is an essential support role within the bar team, responsible for maintaining efficient operations by managing stock, cleanliness, and assisting bartenders. This role ensures that the bar area is well-supplied and orderly, enabling bartenders to serve customers effectively and provide an excellent customer experience.

Roles and Responsibilities

Stocking and Inventory Management

  • Regularly check inventory levels of beverages, glassware, garnishes, and other bar supplies.

  • Replenish bar stocks during shifts and before opening, including refilling ice bins and restocking coolers.

  • Keep the storage areas tidy and organized, ensuring easy access to necessary supplies.

Cleaning and Maintenance

  • Clean bar surfaces, floors, and equipment throughout the shift.

  • Wash, sanitize, and restock glassware and utensils

  • Manage waste disposal and recycling, ensuring proper cleanliness around the bar area.

Bar Setup and Breakdown

  • Assist in preparing the bar for service, including setting up stations and ensuring all necessary tools and ingredients are ready.

  • Help with closing procedures, including cleaning and securing the bar, and storing supplies properly.

Assisting Bartenders

  • Assist bartenders with drink preparation by fetching ingredients, preparing garnishes, and handling basic customer requests.

  • Deliver drinks to servers or directly to customers as required.

Inventory Control

  • Monitor usage and report any shortages or discrepancies to the bar manager.

  • Ensure stock is rotated appropriately to maintain freshness and reduce waste.

Customer Interaction

  • Provide basic customer service by addressing inquiries or assisting with orders when bartenders are occupied.

Compliance and Safety

  • Adhere to all health and safety guidelines, including proper handling of food and alcohol.

  • Report any equipment malfunctions or maintenance needs to the bar manager.

Event Support

  • Help with the setup and breakdown for special events, ensuring that the bar area is ready and equipped for service.

Continuous Improvement

  • Participate in training sessions for new procedures, products, or service standards to enhance skills and performance.

Team Collaboration

  • Collaborate with bartenders, servers, and management to ensure smooth bar operations and address any issues promptly.

Qualifications For Position

  • Prior experience in a bar or restaurant setting is preferred but not required.

  • Strong organizational abilities to manage stock and maintain a tidy bar area.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs)

  • Basic understanding of customer service principles and the ability to assist customers courteously.

  • Effective verbal communication skills for interaction with team members and customers.

  • Ability to work well within a team and follow directions from bartenders and management.

  • Keen attention to detail for maintaining cleanliness and stock levels.

  •  Ability to manage time effectively during busy periods.

  • Basic knowledge of common bar beverages and garnishes.
